What a great day to be Stevenson Titan!
Let's start out today by giving a huge shout out to the Stevenson Titans Volleyball team who snagged their own District Championship this past week! Way to go ladies and keep up the great work!
You might be just waking up with a hoarse throat from cheering or maybe you still haven't gotten to bed from all the excitement. Whatever your situation, we all share one thing this morning as Titan fans, PRIDE!
Runkel Field was electric, as our Stevenson Titans put their playoff lives on the line against the Dakota Cougars in the MHSAA District Championship. Both teams entered the District Championship with a 6-4 record and riding big wins from last week in the pre-districts. These two MAC Red teams were ready to battle and both teams put on a great performance!
The media and social media were predicting Dakota to win this game based on their great run game and the fact they beat the Titans in the regular season, 40-14. But, our Titans relished the underdog role and BELIEVED!
The Titans started off fast finding themselves up 11-0 but by the end of the third quarter the Titans were down 28-18.
This lead seemed insurmountably due to Dakota's high octane rushing attack which was putting points on the board and chewing up time on the clock.
Our Titans, BELIEVED!
Strap your helmets tight because it's about to get wild! Here we go!
The Titans had the ball in their own side of the 50 facing fourth down and three. Some of the fans began to exit, but, the Titans pressed on and 56 yards later, on a Biaggio Madonna run, the Titans were knocking on the door.
Dakota's defense was stingy on the goal line and the Titans were, once again, facing ANOTHER fourth down and goal.
BELIEVE!
TOUCHDOWN! The Titans punch it in on fourth down and now only trailed 28-25 in the fourth quarter.
The action up to this point was heart stopping but the excitement of the game hadn't even begun!
With just over five minutes to play in the game, Dakota's DJ Stepney rushed 49 yards into the end zone and the Titans were down 35-25.
BELIEVE!
Titans got the ball back and immediately went to the air and scored on a 73 yard touchdown pass. There was 5:09 on the clock and the Titans were down 35-32. Stevenson fans were going crazy, parents were pacing, tension was building! What a game!
Stevenson's onside kick was almost recovered but it just slipped out of their grasp. The Titans were SO CLOSE to getting the ball back and more importantly keeping it out of the hands of the Dakota Cougars. The Titans were now faced with having to figure a way to stop the Dakota rushing attack and get the ball back for a chance to win the game.
BELIEVE!
Dakota went back to their rushing attack as it appeared they planned to march down the field and run the clock out to end the Titan's season. But, the Titan's Nick Wingfield, bounced on a Dakota fumble and recovered the turnover. Way to go Nick and the Titan defense! With 4:14 to go in the game the Titans have a chance to tie or take the lead.
On the ensuing drive, the Titans pushed the ball down the field but found themselves facing, yet another, fourth down situation. Our hearts cannot take much more! Titans were in field goal range and were lining up for the field goal attempt. It was fourth down and 10!
BELIEVE!
The game got slightly interrupted, as the coaching staffs from both sides, decided to play a game of time out tag! We say that for a laugh, but it was actually great strategy because it resulted in Dakota burning their last time out. When play resumed, Dakota realized that Stevenson no longer was in field goal formation. Instead, they lined themselves up to go for it on 4th down and 10 yards!
BELIEVE!
HERE WE GO! JUST WATCH!
Titan fans & families cannot be more proud of our football team! We get another week and we will be there to cheer you boys on!
Keep up the good work and we all BELIEVE in you!
See you all on Friday at Runkel as our Titans will be matched up against another District Champion, the Detroit Cass Tech Technicians!
