Today is a great day, it’s GAMEDAY! Great weather is in the forecast for tonight’s game. We are looking forward to the sounds of our award-winning band, cheerleaders, and dance team’s halftime routine.
Stevenson, and our community, have many reasons to be proud. We are steeped in tradition. We are a successful football program with many MAC Red championship banners and multiple trips to the State Finals. Additionally, Stevenson football has sent players to college and the NFL. These are some great accomplishments!
But the biggest accomplishment is seeing how Stevenson football can shape young boys into phenomenal men! During practice our boys are molded, by coaches, into better versions of themselves from the day prior. This past week, we were only able to showcase a small sample of those who benefited from participating in Stevenson football. There are many more! These fine men, our football alum, all benefited by participating in football and have made their community proud.
Consider this featured alum who has been molded by the Stevenson Titan football program. He is a great family man with some great stories to share! Please welcome, our last featured alum, David Sucura!
We are guessing that David would probably pump himself up before a game by listening to music. But, we think it is safe to say he wasn’t getting the adrenaline running by listening to the Top Billboard song in 1993 – Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You.” Maybe it was the #2 song of that year, “Whoomp” (There it is!) by Tag Team.
David first stepped onto Runkel field as a member of the Stevenson varsity football team in 1993. His coach, at the time, was Rick Bye. David stayed active in football until his last game in 1995. He also played basketball and participated in track. David saw most of his playing time on the offensive line, but you would also see him rotating in and out on the defensive side of the ball. David wore #75 and was part of some of the most fantastic teams in Stevenson history. David’s overall record while playing football at Stevenson was 36-5! Whoomp!
David went on to Michigan State in East Lansing. While at MSU, David earned a degree in business administration and a Masters in Kinesiology. This is quite the accomplishment since he spent a lot of time in a Spartan uniform. David played left tackle and left guard from 1996-2000. During his playing time at MSU, he was coached by Nick Saban and Bobby Williams.
After his Spartan playing days, David went south and played professionally for the Tennessee Valley Viper arena football team. David hung up his cleats and returned to his Alma Mater, Michigan State where he became a Graduate Assistant Coach for John L. Smith. David also coached at Clark Atlanta University and Midwestern State University.
David is married to Emily for 17 years this November! They have two children, Reese who is 13 and Cooper, who is close behind at 12. Both are currently attending Seneca Middle School. David is involved in medical sales for Therapeutic Consultant at LivaNova.
‘The Catch’ by Mike Bye and ‘The Tackle’ by Kevin Wills are David’s all-time favorite Stevenson football memories. We pried for more information and details, but David stayed mum by saying, “Next time you see Coach Bye you can ask him about those two plays!”
David has some great successes in his adult life and contributes his participation in Stevenson football for teaching him that the odds can be stacked against you when trying to achieve a goal. Relying on teamwork and putting in effort will carry you a long way.
David’s advice to our current players is that they should begin to cultivate relationships now. There are so many people that can help you along the way that will remember the way you carry yourself now.
David, we hope to see you, and your family, one day at Runkel. Come on by this Friday, and cheer the Titans as they kick off against the Eisenhower Eagles at 7:00 PM!
